Is the apple tv powerful enough to play HD content?

Dumb question alert... (Context: I've got Boxee fully installed on my ATV now. It's now prompting me, via the only interaction point I can figure out, to "add user", at which point it prompts me for my username and password. Which I'm assuming I don't have because I haven't been granted access to the Alpha to enable myself to set up an account.) That so?

PS: On my first attempt to set up/signin to Boxee and get it running, I left open the "add user" screen while I went looking for answers to the question above. After about 5 minutes of being on that screen it froze up - screen grayed out a bit and I couldn't quit, reboot, etc. by Apple remote and had to unplug/restart.

Thanks for guidance and the product itself - pscyhed to get started on it.

Follow up: as I was writing this I'd left the Boxee sign-in screen up and now finding that that too is frozen - can't quit it or use remote (it just beeps, registering the connection but not responding) to back out of it to main ATV menu and going to have to restart again...

This is extremely interesting to me as I have a lot of old XviD/x264 rips that I have made myself from old backups and it's an absolute pain to have to re-encode.

Is there any way to go about increasing Alpha-invite chances outside of applying on the main page?

Wow. Just a few days ago I was searching for a way to do this on my ATV. I couldn't come up with anything that wasn't too invasive and then, serendipitously, I find this through CrunchGear. Way to go!

I'm just a little sad about the possibility of having to wait "a few weeks" to be able to try it out while I'm in the invite queue.

I'm in the same boat as most of the people here: downloaded, installed, updated, launched and now I'm staring at the "setup an account" screen on my ATV with no account or means of entering the data (it does not respond to the remote).

I applied for an account on the Boxee website, but it said it might take weeks. Is there any way I can get an invite sooner than that?

Make sure you create a patch stick with a Mac OS format; as most USB drives are Windows formatted. Also, unplug any other Mac formatted USB drives just in case. You don't want the Patchstick utility to write an image to a spinning disk...

I am currently running aTV Flash (Enables Jaman, Nito, Couch surfer, etc), will the Boxee aTV flash work with this...as in layer ontop of that patch?
Maybe you could talk to that company and get them to add your software to that as well.
Look forward to adding it, if it will work with aTV Flash.

Ah, we too noticed that the Apple TV doesn't wake up from a sleep mode in the same way that the Mac PC line does. So we need you to disable the screen saver in our initial AppleTV build of boxee.

Hey guys, this release is awesome, I've been messing around with hacking ATV for awhile and am really glad to see this come about. Anyway, I've been messing around with it a bit and I've got nearly 800gigs worth of movies that I have ripped from my personal collection just waiting for an opportunity to try this out. Is there any way I could be forwarded an invite to truly test its functionality?

Btw, I have noticed the above issues with leaving Boxee at the login screen, requiring the ATV to be powered down and back.

Remember you need 512MB, but a 1GB or higher will work fine...

Is anyone having a problem with xbmc and screen resolution?
when i first opened it the screen was extremely small (i have a 37" plasma) i set the res to 1080i and now the screen is way too huge... i am trying to change the res so i can get it small again but i can not see any menu options.... aggravating, anyways i am trying to reinstall and see if that resets everything.

I installed the patchstick and it works great, although without an invite to Boxee it's pretty useless now. And I also don't have my normal ATV menu options, just Boxee and XBMC. How can I get my other ATV menu items back?

1) if the sha1 checksum fails, then the download of 2Z694-5428-3.dmg failed and you need to delete it from the downloads folder.

2) WARNING DO NOT RUN THE USB PATCHSTICK TWICE, there is an error that will require a AppleTV Factory Restore to fix if you run the PATCHSTICK twice. Much apologies if this has happened and a new version is on it's way up. Once again, DO NOT RUN a patchstick made from atvusb-creator-1.0.0.b1.tar.gz TWICE.

SoN9ne: Didn't work for me. I had already tried running ATV-USB Creator, plugging the USB drive in, powering down and up the Apple TV and no joy.

When I run ATV-USB Creator and get:

This is what i did:
1) open disk utility, partition the usb (mas osx extended journaled, GUID)
2) open atvusb-creator
3) select atv-patchstick
4) select your installation options, i left all on by default
5) if you have the 2Z694-5428-3.dmg go ahead and select it, if not make sure you have the correct usb selected and hit create. This will automatically download the dmg an create the patchstick

If you get a very fast completion (Complete! (0:00:01) ), need to take the any spaces out of the name path. atvusb-creator-1.0.b2.tar.gz has a space in it's folder name.

May i suggest that the atvusb will do a partition as well, before the creation(obviously ;) ) more of a convenience thing really. I am installing atv path first then this, i am using the same usb stick for both, its just a pain... im sure it would be a pain for you to auto partition as well tho?

@77 -> not possible under the requirements to boot under the AppleTV. Each patchstick has it's own set organization. There's actually two partitions that are contained in the disk image, the first is what you see and only contains the installation script and payloads. The second is an AppleTV recovery formatted partition which will not mount under OSX. The second partition is where atv-bootloader lives.

problem with frozen remote -
after install and initial success using boxee, my apple TV isn't responding to my remote and is stuck in my apple tv menu (although the light on the apple tv flickers when i press the remote). The factory restore (using menu + scroll down) hasn't responded either. I have also tried rebooting apple tv and reinstalling boxee.

Ok, got my invite, now just have to get patchstick working. :(

Booted off Patchstick (created with atvusb-creator-1.0.b3 no problem, 1gb Sandisk Cruzer with i3 removed, of course). Wireless connection gave one error, I don't think it ever fully succeeded connecting to the internet... it needs to, right? Eventually screen went dark, I gave up and restarted. ATV started normally, but no Boxee menu. Tried a second time, this time I pulled an ethernet cable over. This wired connection seemed to work better but everything seemed to stall in the same place, still, although it clearly pulled an IP no problem this round. Still no boxee. What gives?

Regarding the menu lacking the original atv menu: Did a hard re-set (on the remote hold down the menu button and the volume down button together until it re-sets). Then re-installed atv update and then re-uploaded the patchstick one time only. This time it worked. Thank you Avner.

I got it to install successfully the first time. I to am not in the alpha yet so my exploration ends there until I get an invite. I did notice that once you exit out of boxee if you hit the menu button one to many time you can end up in a black limbo screen. It was like it didn't know I was already on the top-level menu and kept going back.

Update: I have been able to get logged in via telnet. Root password is "root." When I view the patchstick on my Mac patchstick.sh is there. When it is booted on my aTV it is not. At least I am making progress. :)

I'd like to install boxee on my already-hacked Apple TV, which is currently running version 2.1 of the Apple TV software, with nitotv, perian, et al working just fine.

I'm guessing there's a boxee.app executable directory I can copy to the appropriate location on my Apple TV, and maybe a few other files that need to go in other places, and then it will just run, right? I don't want to use a patchstick and possibly blow away all my other working apple TV apps.

Is there a distribution of boxee available for folk like me?

Couldn't wait to give this a shot at 5:40am this morning.... installed apparently (seems to be relatively successful in the boxee.log, webserver starting.... lots of permission denied messages however)

I have tried to launch XBMC but I'm getting a Cannot launch XBMC from path: /Applications/XBMC.app/Contents/MacOS/XBMC

message. Does this possibly mean the install procedure did not work? I'm extremely interested in the social aspect of boxee but I'd also like to try XBMC. As it stands now, I have hacked my appleTV with the perian codecs and some others and I use AppleTVfooler to wrap everything into MOV containers. XBMC looks like it may be able to play the files natively.

Turns out I was just ONE reboot away from everything working! And wow... right off the bat, all I can say is.... WOW, this is beautiful. I think Apple could really take some cues from this. (I'm using the default theme no less!!! I haven't even tried this "aeone" theme that I've heard about)

I can't WAIT to try the social features of boxee!!!!

For now, I'm going to be fooling with the resolutions cause 720p leaves that title bar at the top.... yet "full screen" seems like it's cutting something out.

Use the glorious ATV USB Creator that Scott created and now I have a appletv with boxee loaded albeit no login to go forward. Have used XBMC since 2003 and can't wait to see what you done with it. I did have some docs handy just in case my reboot didn't work. I believe the google search was something like "xbmc manual install" site:xbmc.org

Basically what it involved was copying the xbmclauncher.app file to the same location as frontrow. (this is in a path that is executable)

I'm stoked to have the freedom of my old favorite XBMC on more updated AppleTV hardware. I installed Boxee as a part of the process and didn't think much about it at first beyond signing up for an account and getting on the waiting list. I've started reading up on Boxee over the past couple of days and think that Boxee+ AppleTV+ HD TV + web media + social networking = a little bit of heaven. I hope its as good as I'm anticipating. :D

Works fine, no issues, even if it blows up, you shouldn't have to have it serviced at the factory, just doing a factory restore should get you back and running fine.

It sounds as if your patchstick is broken, make sure you're using the correct version of atvusb-creator. Mine was version 1.0b7.

hey there globals! I've just loaded the XBMC / Boxee patch stick onto my Apple TV. I'm so far enjoying the likes of shoutcast and lastfm streaming from my HIFI. I've signed up for a boxee account and am waiting (can this process be expidited - trabraham at g mail dot com?). I'm looking forward to getting started with boxee and am especially looking forward to Hulu. I do anticipate an issue with Hulu though, as I'm located in Singapore. Does anyone know if I can mask my IP address on my Apple TV box in order to get Hulu working here?

For a boxee invite just go to boxee.com and check the forums. Ask a guy name Marve or something like that for an invite. Make sure you sign up first so they have your email address. Another way is follow boxee on twitter and ask for an invite there.

Hey guys, Happy New Year!

Been reading with avid interest about Boxee on ATV. I have just taken plunge and installed via ATVUSB Creator (now there's a couple of talented guys helping out the rest of us!).
I have installed Boxee OK from menu, but it then askes to 'LOGIN' or 'NEW USER'. I select the latter but then comes up with just a username/password box....no option to CREATE new user details. I then ended up on website being referred to the registration page for the 'alpha'...with a 4-6 week wait for an 'invitation'?? Can I get one, or can I be registered for the previous version as I would love to start using functionality. Many thanks !

Great instructions. I was inspired by your article at the possibility of getting some net content onto the main HD tv instead of kinking my neck trying to watch movies and tv on my Powermac.

I finally got an appleTV, hacked it with a usb stick and now I need a invite to get a username and password. Can anybody help me out.
