boxee blog: boxee blog » week of Dec 15th - bug fixing version

  • Patrick Algrim · 1 year ago
Hey Guys, hope my thread in the ATV help section opened the doors to the bug of Hulu not playing R rated content. Thanks for fixing the bugs. It's definitely one of the most tedious tasks and sucks to do! So as a user of Boxee, and a person who loves what you guys are doing, THANKS! :)
  • Rick Rodriguez · 1 year ago
How about the indexing of content. On all of my installations, Boxee refuses to go beyond about 530 folders.
  • Rick Rodriguez · 1 year ago
And what about the remote control behavior? I'm running ATV 2.1 and a short menu click jumps to top vs. back one level.
  • Jerry · 1 year ago
Not sure if you count it as a biggie, but if you remove (or let me change) the 150mb threshold mentioned in the forum (http://is.gd/aIku), I could also access my South Park, Robot Chicken, Twin Peaks and Scrubs (and a few more) episodes. :)
  • ksc · 1 year ago
hoping that you'll surprise us again with netflix on apple tv version!
  • Casey · 1 year ago
I second the Netflix for ATV!
  • terp · 1 year ago
Would be great if you guys would also fix the "Menu" button bug with Apple Remote. Previous boxee versions would go back a screen; with the current build, you have to hold the button down in order for it to have that behavior. A click of the button sends you back to the root screen.
  • Grant · 1 year ago
Also concerning performance on ATV, would it be possible to have a sort of Boxxee Lite option, which keeps lists and menus text-based by default except maybe for highlighted item, making it less graphically intensive in order to address netflix problem and a laggy home screen?
  • kevin · 1 year ago
Agreed. Netflix on ATV would be awesome!
  • Justin · 1 year ago
AppleTV version - Having to try to open Boxee, see a black screen, hit Menu, try Boxee again, black screen, Menu, Boxee, etc. until it finally opens is a big problem that many are having. I hope that gets fixed too! Once in Boxee, it works great though, and I love it! Thank you Boxee team!
  • Tom Dibble · 1 year ago
By "spinning circle of death" being fixed, do you mean fixing the underlying issue (most Hulu videos added in the last 1-2 weeks being unplayable in Boxee) or just failing gracefully (which would still make Boxee useless for watching Hulu as most of the new stuff is unplayable)?
  • Jon · 1 year ago
I second Justin's comment - nothing but black screen upon starting Boxee definitely affects the user experience :)
  • MDPauley · 1 year ago
Any chance of an updated FlashLib-win32.dll for windows users before the 15th?
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Justin @Jon the black screen on launch on Apple TV is an issue that probably needs to be addressed by the Scott/Stephan from the USB Creator team. i think they are looking into it.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
@MDPauly it's scheduled for that release as well.
@Grant unlikely, but we are constantly working on improving performance
@Rick Rodriguez please email me at tsella boxee tv - that is very strange
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
@Tom Dibble please email me some specific examples at tsella boxee tv
  • Eric Rizner · 1 year ago
I know DVD playback is a problem for some of us. Not sure if this is user wide on the Mac Mini.
  • Tony · 1 year ago
There seems to be DVD region issues on my Mac Mini. The drive is set to Region 2 (I’m in the UK), but Region 2 discs won't play—just gives a blank screen and crash. Region 1 discs play perfectly, which is just weird!
  • Jedd · 1 year ago
i know there are work arounds, but how about making the daily show and colbert report recognized as tv and not movies....

    love this version though
  • leachbj · 1 year ago
I still have the red screen overlay when playing any video content (local or movie trailers).

iMac Intel Core 2 Duo NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT
  • Prashanth · 1 year ago
Adding configuration screen to enter Picasa credentials would be gr8.
  • thinkerofthings · 1 year ago
Please fix the music recognition side of things. I've had my mp3's id tagged with Itunes, read in the forums, have to be similar to last.fm, downloaded a tag editor, did some manual stuff, still a no go. Finally went through some and manually recognized them, which is a pain, it work better on the mac, however on the apple TV it would recognize (manually) then when I go to albums, for instance it would show for example 7, for a split second in the upper right hand corner, but by the time the screen populated, that number would 1 and only the last manually recognized album and artist would show up. It's very frustrating, because I'm really interested in the MTV plugin you created, but as of now I have to recognize an artist and album, then go to the mtv plugin to watch videos, then start all over again for another artist...
  • thinkerofthings · 1 year ago
Also do you have any projections on the feasibility of Netflix for Apple Tv. I'm highly interested in this, but didn't know if I needed to buy a Roku for that, Xbox 360, blue ray player that has the functionality or the new Tivos that are supposed to have it. As much as I love all the electronics, I'll be extremely happy if you were to manage to get it going on the apple tv
  • thinkerofthings · 1 year ago
Last post... Vodpod has an api, that would be interesting to get going. It allows you to make channels by pulling videos from different sites. It has a feed function, but it didn't work in boxee. Also I came across a function on Youtube, that allows to play videos that have multiple parts in succession, is that available on boxee
  • thinkerofthings · 1 year ago
    sorry one last thing...

one idea I had, if it turns out to be impossible to do netflix on apple tv...

would it be possible to create a plugin that streams Netflix from a computer from your network, or have the computer share the processing job with the apple tv. Just theories...
  • bmoura · 1 year ago
Will the next Windows alpha build pick up Netflix? (I hope so!)
  • Trent · 1 year ago
Pls fix the menu button bug
  • Ben Lancaster · 1 year ago
My main issue at the moment is that the virtual keyboard on Linux doesn't work at all any more. I used to be able to either use the numeric keys to type (SMS style), or navigate around the keyboard, but neither of these work any more. Also, once the virtual keyboard is up, I can't get rid of it without plugging in a physical keyboard and hitting escape.

    Have confirmed this on:

    • Fedora 8 i386 (compiled form source)
    • Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 (compiled from source and from testing binaries)
  • Andrew · 1 year ago
Getting MythTV support working again would be great.
  • rob · 1 year ago
Boxee crashes for me everytime I try to play music - But, I built from source and am running on Fedora 9.
  • Kalen · 1 year ago
I promise not to harp on this anymore, but please lower the iFileSizeThreshold variable to like 50 instead of 150! Thanks! :)

(I don't like editing released code because my 15 minute TV shows never get recognized)
  • Dan · 1 year ago
I'll second or third or whatever the black screen / never launch issue, thats annoying.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
@Eric Rizner, @Tony - we are aware of these issues.
@Jedd @thinkerofthings - we are working on improving indexing in general, including these issues.
    @leachbj - please try under guisettings.xml <videoplayer> section to add <rendermethod>1</rendermethod>
@Prashanth - i think its in the works.
@thinkerofthings - re using external player to stream netflix to boxee on atv, you can already do this with playon via upnp.
@bmoura - we are working on it, not sure regarding this version.
@Ben Lancaster - compiling from source is unsupported. please email support/or post in forum regarding the test binaries.
    @Andrew - i agree.
@rob - unsupported, but please post in forum.
@Kalen - we are looking at how to resolve this (how we can remove this threshold altogether)
@Dan - team atvusb are making good progress on this.</videoplayer>
  • fernando · 1 year ago
Please please please add support to mark shows as watched :-) This is the only reason I use xbmc, because I can't filter the files I've already watched in Boxee :/
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
@fernando - we have this on our todo list, thanks
  • matt · 1 year ago
Need adult swim shows on there. I see there is some oddball way to do it by making some script and putting it somewhere, but it should be standard, like cnn.

Make the suspend work. It needs to shut down the HDMI signal so that my tv sees there is no signal and shuts off. Right now it appears to do nothing.

When the display dims when nothing is happening, I think when a song was playing from local disk, the screen saver never kicks in, so the screen still burns.

How come the icon on the login screen by my name never updates to use the one associated with my boxee account online?

Please add more remote key bindings. ATV lets us add/learn remotes with lots of buttons - PAUSE, FF, skip, etc. I want to use them in boxee, Especially PAUSE.
  • Creative Web · 1 year ago
Great News :) We're starting to use boxee on Apple Tv and it's really a great product, can't wait to test this new release.
  • Tryphoon · 1 year ago
Seems that my Neflix movies are all here but none of my TV Series are available...
Another big thing missing for me is the ability to edit a scanned file/movie. E.g.: I have several TV Series in French. As these are not recognized by the system, I have no way to manually edit name, thumbnail, etc (as I would be able to do it in Plex for example).
  • Jedd · 1 year ago
i know you are working on a watched list, but any chance that it can remember where you are in a show?

    that'ld be nice
  • mw · 1 year ago
Please, Please, Please fix the Black screen of death on the ATV. (aka trying to run boxee and all we get is a black screen)

Would also like to see the play/pause being passed into u-tube videos as they did before.
  • kogyaru · 1 year ago
Allow closed captions to be shown on Hulu videos that have them; I can actually see the "cc" option on some, but because the Boxee layer is in front, there doesn't seem to be a way now to select captions.

I would greatly appreciate this option as I am deaf and can't watch any video without subtitles.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
    - we are working on the tv series.
    - manually editing the name/thumb is in our future.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
the atv bsod is being worked on by the excellent team at atvusb-creator. i'm assured its coming soon.

what is the problem with play/pause on you-tube?
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
please try to enable cc in your hulu.com profile. should work, will test.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
    on our todo list
  • mw · 1 year ago
If you try to play a utube video and the video comes up paused you can nolonger play the video because the play/pause does not seem to be being passed to the utube video anymore.
In past versions there was a problem that boxee and the utube video would be in opposite states, aka utube is paused but boxee is playing or utube is playing but boxee thinks it is paused, but you could get it to play and there was a work around for getting them in sinc.

Here is a link to the posts where is was discussed.

I just had a hell of a time trying to pause CSI: Miami via the CBS portal on my aTV. Once I realized the show wouldn't pause, it took me another 2-3 minutes to get the menu overlay off my screen.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
we used to have adultswim in our rss directory, but that feed is dead. i looked around but could not find a live feed. why not email them, ask them to support it?

we have a ticket regarding the suspend.

i've opened a ticket regarding the dim on pause.

we have an open ticket regarding the login thumb. its stored once in the client side.

we have an open task for third party remotes with atv. i imagine it will come from the boxee/xbmc community at some point if we don't do it first. you are welcome to try by hacking system/keymap.xml
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
i've yet to see such a stream. can you provide with a sample link?
  • mw · 1 year ago
This happens if you setup an rss feed to a youtube video. I just tried it with the youtube plugin and it does not come up paused.

The exact thing I was playing was a rss feed to the "Rick Mercer" youtube channel.
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
i've tested and confirmed it working. login at hulu.com and set to automatically enable closed captions. under boxee, login to your hulu profile, and anything with cc will show them.
  • freduruncle · 1 year ago
PLEASE>>>>>> make the menu button work properly when 2.1 or 2.2 are used. As of the last version "menu" takes you to the main screen. "Hold Menu" takes you up one level. I can't tell you how many times I've quit using boxee out of frustration. I've started using xbc just to avoid this very irritating bug.
  • avner ronen · 1 year ago
    agreed, will be solved.
  • matt · 1 year ago
I emailed adult swim to ask them to publish an RSS.

Since my appletv doesn't run the slocate daemon, can you post the path to the keymap.xml file I should edit?
  • JHB · 1 year ago
This latest release is horrific. Aside from the black screen and having to kill multiple PIDs of dropbear and XBMC that seem to be orphaned, my vide to audio sync is worse than ever. Playing an avi file that isn't 720p throttles my CPU to 90-100% the entire time. Something went awry...
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
this is a known issue (sadly). we are looking to solve it by beginning of next year (that's not too far away, i hope..)
  • tom sella · 1 year ago
sorry you feel this way. we know it has some issues (as the original post pointed out, we are working on them), but the experience you are describing is far from what we've been hearing so far.

please try to do a complete reinstall of boxee.

    1. restore to factory - menu+minus at boot time, language selection, restore.
    2. update to latest atv
    3. create a new atvusb stick getting latest and greatest from http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/
    4. patch atv, update launcher, update boxee

contact me at tsella boxee tv for any assistance.
  • -nickx- · 1 year ago
    Great,

Good to see that you are going to make progress.
  • bmoura · 1 year ago
It sounds like you have all of the key issues on that list.

I'll be watching for the announcement of the next release this week very closely !
  • Brian · 1 year ago
If the Boxee team can get Netflix to run on ATV. That would be amazing!
Look at the specs. For Mac you need to have an Intel machine running Silver Light. Granted that the ATV falls into the first requirement. Silver Light requires a minimum of 512MB of RAM. The ATV only ships with 256MB of RAM.

If you're familiar with Microsoft, then you know they are very messy with their work. Usually ending up with bulky programs that are intensive and slow at best.
  • Scott Davilla · 1 year ago
for those with problems under atv r2.3 in getting boxee into frontscreen see

    Hulu Subscriptions
    Netflix on AppleTV
Black screen when starting a stream
  • Lyle · 1 year ago
As some have already suggested when I try to open Boxee on AppleTV, I get a black screen, and have to unplug and plugin the AppleTV manually to get the AppleTV menu and then to Boxee.

Also, with some many updates to Boxee it would be nice when you go to the Update screen, that it would be evident which software updates are not installed (or conversely, which already have been installed). Thanks!
  • Macphisto · 1 year ago
Still praying that someone can figure out how to get Hulu video to play cleanly on the AppleTV. The most recent update was an improvement but still not good enough to watch without getting hopelessly distracted.
  • mw · 1 year ago
Just to let you know if you get the black screen on start up of boxee 95% of the time you can get out of it by pressing menu a few times, I normally find that if I press menu 2-3 times then wait for about 30-40 seconds (feels like forever) then the atv returns to the atv menu. Not the best solution but you don't have to get off the couch to do it.
  • Tamir · 11 months ago
    1. when i use hulu it wont let me stream in HD (in windows version)so the resolution is very bad when i use boxee
    2. in hulu when you use their site you have an option under TV-> Browse, to do it by network, this is a lot easier to work with because they have so many shows.
    2. pause button doesnt always work
  • BigEarn · 10 months ago
Hulu will not let me watch a rated r movie like "GO". I cannot figure out how to change my age on the profile so that it lets me watch rated r content. Anyone???
