boxee blog: boxee blog » Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central and what’s next

  • Jordan · 1 year ago
The big one, of course, is Pandora. They go to extreme lengths to obfuscate their protocol (hint: Blowfish) so I don't know how much luck you'll have making it work without their blessing, unless you just drop their Flash player into the Boxee UI somehow like you did with Hulu. I really hope you can partner with them or otherwise make it work somehow.
  • almeyerx · 1 year ago
ABC Television shows! ... I don't know how, but that would be awesome if you could do it!
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Jordan i think Pandora will require that we have an agreement with them. and maybe pay $ (which kind of sucks when you have free alternatives such as last.fm or jango)

we'll reach out to them and see what they say
  • avner · 1 year ago
@almeyerx ABC will be great. Lost, Desperate Housewives, Scrubs, Grey's Anatomy... lots of great stuff.
  • danb · 1 year ago
itunes content... podcasts and non-drm stuff...
  • Rick · 1 year ago
ABC.com and the Move Networks player definitely! It would also be great to see higher quality playback of Hulu's programming.

I also would love to see Pandora. Their "music genome project" recommendation engine is unmatched.

I'd also like the YouTube access to be improved. One of the items that I miss is access to my subscriptions.

You guys are really doing great work. I suspect you're going to help Apple move quite a few Apple TVs once word gets out about Boxee.
  • William Maggos · 1 year ago
i am an alpha tester, but havent had a chance to check it out yet. so im not sure if you support these, but id really love to request support for:

    - bittorrent RSS (ala Miro)
    - Shoutcast TV

these two technologies (platforms?) allow for the small, independent producer to compete against the big guys. for content producers of episodic content, bittorrent RSS automates delivery and decreases the cost substantially for independents to distribute high quality content (HD, large file size). and for producers of live streams, the technology behind Shoutcast TV is an open standard meaning no need to rely on Ustream, Stickam, etc.

and what you are doing is another extremely important piece of the puzzle. i see it as luring consumers in to getting the web on their nice HDTV with the big boys like Hulu, etc and then once the tech is there, the independent producers can win their hearts.

so, keep up the good work and please consider my suggestions. thanks.
  • Evan · 1 year ago
With the Netflix API being released it would be awesome to see that incorporated into Boxee!
  • Mark · 1 year ago
Before more content providers, I'd rather have the ability to search. Both inside of specific content providers (say YouTube) or all of them at once.

The more content providers their are the more difficult it will be find what you want to watch.

Also for looking up television show metadata, it would be sweet if you used http://www.thetvdb.com/. I was looking through some of the information they have on shows, and its just amazing. Everything from series banners, season graphics, etc. Pretty neat stuff. Oh and Boxee rocks, too!
  • Foppe · 1 year ago
I really love the streaming media things in boxee (though being a Dutch citizen and not having connection to all media) But I (and my girlfriend) still like the old fashioned TV and we have a mythtv setup for that. I really would like to see boxee connected and control the mythbackend with boxee.
BTW I had boxee connected, but after the update mythtv doesn't work anymore.
  • kuntz · 1 year ago
Hay guys, Hulu and CBS are only for people in USA. Maybe you could add something for european users :)
  • kuntz · 1 year ago
Hey guys, Hulu and CBS are only for people in USA. Maybe you could add something for european users :)
  • stu · 1 year ago
the spanish national broadcaster (rtve.es), plus bbc content would be great. keep up the top work!
  • avner · 1 year ago
@danb iTunes/iPhoto support is very important. there is a plug-in in the works.

non-drm stuff is an issue, as Apple does not license their FairPlay DRM.. :(
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Rick Move Networks would be great. it's not just ABC, also CW and a bunch of others.

i agree re YouTube. much more is required to make it a good experience.
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Evan the Netflix API as far as I understand it is just access to their Queue, Recommendations, Metadata, but not to the actual streams..

would be cool to enhance the experience with the data from Netflix, but even better is being able to watch the movies!
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Mark totally agree re Search. it is becoming a major flaw of the user experience not having one.

we're actually using the TheTVDB for some stuff. great source.
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Foppe there is work being done by a guy in Scotland to connect to the MythTV backend. should be great once it works.

please check the forum http://forum.boxee.tv re the conflict between boxee and MythTV. is it just a remote issue? or did it stop working completely?
  • avner · 1 year ago
we do need to start paying more attention to European content. especially with the geo-restrictions on Hulu, CBS, etc.

i think we should be able to do the BBC pretty easily. not sure about others.. and also don't know how to prioritize them, yet..
  • Jonathan · 1 year ago
Thanks for the update. Can't wait for my alpha acceptance. Keep up the great work guys. This is a perfect product for someone like myself who wants to dump cable and need to convince the wife to come along too!

    +1 to ABC
+1 to CW -- we gotta get our wives on board! :-)
+1 to Lala.com (don't really use them yet but they are up and coming for music streaming)
  • Chris · 1 year ago
    Netflix would be awesome.
  • justin · 1 year ago
HBO, Showtime...some dexter would be great! I second Netflix as well.
  • avner · 1 year ago
@chris, @justin you know, i think we should do a petition lobbying Netflix to work with boxee :) gather like 10,000 votes and send it to them.. what do you think?
  • Packfan · 1 year ago
How about discovery. They have some full episodes online (like Prototype This) that are not in Hulu.

    http://video.discovery.com/
  • mwunder · 1 year ago
I would like to see SouthParkStudios.com and their viewer installed. Similar to the Hulu player I think. They have all the episodes.

    Pandora would be nice
  • Packfan · 1 year ago
@mwunder: All of the SouthPark episodes (from season one through last night's episode) are available through the Comedy Central link that is in Boxee now.
  • Mark · 1 year ago
    In order of priority:

    iTunes/iPhoto integration,
ABC (Fancast has much of this too),
    Discovery,
    Pandora,
    SouthPark (Full Episodes),
    Netflix

(also, on the UI side I would like to not have to hit the pause button twice to pause.. once to bring up the on screen menu, and then a second time to pause.. on the apple remote, default should be to pause immediately from the pause/play button, and use the "menu" button to bring up the on screen menu)
  • yuval · 1 year ago
@William Maggos -- there's a hidden ShoutcastTV channel. Any content you like there specifically?

Add a new source (though Settings) for the URL:

    rss://dir.boxee.tv/shoutcasttv/

    Enjoy
  • jnovello · 1 year ago
My personal preference would be to see live streaming content added, specifically from Livestation (http://www.livestation.com/). Their partner streams are high quality, and users are adding new streaming channels all the time.

Ustream (http://www.ustream.tv/) is another fun source of live streaming content. I would use ALL of these services more if I could watch them on the big screen, and not tie up my computer.

I would also cast a vote for Shoutcast TV integration (similar to what's included in VLC, I guess). There's a certain amount of redundancy there, and some low-quality streams, but it's fun for the randomness of "what's on".

Vimeo (http://www.vimeo.com/) doesn't do live, I don't think, but would be fun to include. Lots of HD content there especially.

    Finally - what about Joost?

    Thanks for a great product.
  • aduteau · 1 year ago
Hi guys, first let me say that Boxee Rocks big time !
Now for the requests, I am not a US citizen ... so I would like it if we could find a work around this so everyone in the world could have all the same access (would be a major marketing tool)

    then the others as follow:
    -Itunes and Iphoto support
    -BBC's I player
    -ABC
    -Discovery

I am pretty confidant that you guys can achieve this !
Also could someone from the Team email me to tell me if its even a possibility that we none US people could get Hulu and CBS on AppleTV (not a PC or an iMac) :)

thx again for all the hard work guys, you are turning AppleTV into what it should have been from the start !
  • aduteau · 1 year ago
Oh and i forgot ... National Geographic has got a couple of videos going on too ! :)
  • Bob · 1 year ago
    Hi,

    Fantastic piece of code.

As a canadian without Hulu access. I'd like to have all the online show we can find on:
    --http://www.cbc.ca/video/ (CBC English)
    --http://www.radio-canada.ca/audio-video/ (Radio-Canada French)

    Thanks
    Bob
  • Tatil · 1 year ago
National Geographic Channel has a number of episodes and clips available in Hulu. They all come out under the clips, even though some of them are 45 minutes long.
  • Tatil · 1 year ago
Well, I would not try very hard to find and support a way to let non-US viewers get acceess to US-only streams. They can easily prevent Boxee from operating with their streams.

Otherwise, ABC (the US one) and Netflix is on top of my list.

Does the UK users have access to BBC?
  • Tatil · 1 year ago
NOVA has a lot of shows posted on its own website in addition to the ones they add to Hulu. National Geographic Channel has a lot more episodes on its website as well.
  • edrock · 1 year ago
i would suggest setting up a section on your forum for this. as it is going to get out of hand the amount of options/things people want. like i requested on the forum already, i would like to be able to access vimeo from boxee

    thanks
  • justin · 1 year ago
@avner Sure that sounds good. Write it up :)
  • aduteau · 1 year ago
Well I am all up for the 2 channels that bob talked about:
    –http://www.cbc.ca/video/ (CBC English)
    –http://www.radio-canada.ca/audio-video/ (Radio-Canada French)
I am a Canadian and it would be great for us to have those,
also being french and all, there is this channel called TVA
that does live web shows just like watching TV, they stream it live at the same time it plays on TV.
Seriously it would be awsome if we could play this channel !

    http://tva.canoe.ca/

just scroll down the page till you see on the right side a section called: "Diffusion Web Simultanee"

:) Please dont forget us French speakers :P lol
  • poprock · 1 year ago
Speaking as UK user, my priorities would be the BBC iPlayer, tighter iTunes integration (or even just sorting music by ID3 tags rather than folder structure for those of us who let iTunes sort their filing), and maybe the ability to set separate proxies for each online media source.
  • Jeremy Toeman · 1 year ago
    NHL.TV!
  • Tom Dibble · 1 year ago
First, add yet another vote for ABC.com. For something unique: we have a house full of kids, and so spend a lot of time with kid programming on. Aside from the biggies you already support and ABC, the one site we visit most often for video is:

    NickJR.com

It seems like they have their own clunky interface, so I don't know how easily the frameworks you have in place will work with them. However, it would be a HUGE win, and allow us to move the old G4 laptop away from the main TV for good (have everything going through the AppleTV).
  • Derek · 1 year ago
I agree with others. ABC and the CW would be a amazing!
  • avner · 1 year ago
    so far it seems:
    #1 - ABC
    #2 - Netflix
    #3 - International content

we need to collect this type of feedback in an organized fashion, so we could focus our attention on the right content sources/partners.

    will put something together.
  • fg · 1 year ago
I'd like to see the ability to stream the MLB and NHL sports packages.
  • Angelo · 1 year ago
My girlfriend currently watches anime streamed from a site called AnimeSquish (I believe), it would be great if Boxee could incorporate some anime streaming sites.
  • Azfar Adil · 1 year ago
    Hi,

Firstly, I want to say that Boxee ROCKS!!!

The requests I would like to make are...

    1. Boxee should be able to read meta data from the file and use that to search for info on imdb or cddb. This would make the incidence of misidentified files (huge problem for me) much lower.

    2. Netflix access.

Thanks again for the awesome product. Looking forward to the beta.
  • sastian · 1 year ago
    Keep up the awesome work..

ill throw my chips in for NETFLIX...
and custom identification via browsing to IMDB
  • Will Scott · 1 year ago
    Hi,

BBC iPlayer would be fantastic - if you need anyone in the UK to be able to test it just give me a shout! As it is done via flash streaming (a la Hulu) I would hope that integrating in would be a fairly similar process.

Thanks for all your hard work - boxee is turning into an amazing app!

    Will

Under XBMC Bas Rieter has done great work for Dutch content with the XOT-UZG plugin/script. (http://code.google.com/p/xot-uzg/) Perhaps it's an idea to look at some of his sources for content? Or ask him directly.
  • 70watts · 1 year ago
Hulu and CBS are very sweet - but since you asked... Fancast would be neat.
  • Gubatron · 1 year ago

    First off, I love Boxee!
I'm building a MAME Cocktail cabinet and media jukebox and I'd love to use boxee as the front end. It would be nice to have a MAME or other game emulator launcher.
  • Mexico Tom · 1 year ago

Don't forget Aperture support if you are putting in iPhoto support. I was thinking about it and I think there is a way to cheat in Leopard. The finder allows access to the media in both types of libraries via the finder, so it stands to reason that either a simple symbolic linking would work, or a VFS gateway to them if not.
  • Jeremy Wellner · 1 year ago
I highly throw my weight behind NetFlix!

I already have the AppleTV and really don't want to get yet another box for only a single provider!!!

    Ted.com

  • Samir Satam · 1 year ago
    Guys,
Netflix is going to use Silverlight for OS X. Can we get a silverlight plugin and then use netflix onto boxee?
  • avner · 1 year ago
    @samir we'll do our best
  • bruijnesteijn · 1 year ago
I like your product, but I am pretty frustrated about the limitations for non-US viewers. I understand the Boxee position, but someone out there should understand that traditional practices around limiting broadcasting is so previous century. Why are these US networks not transforming into world-wide firms as in other businesses is already common practice e.g. airlines, banks Why would they want to sell programs to other foreign TV stations if they can make money themselves using modern technology....
  • Phil · 1 year ago
Netflix instant integration would be awesome!
  • avner · 1 year ago
@bruijnesteijn i agree. i hope the TV networks will enable International viewers to stream from their sites. will be the best way for them to fight piracy. in the age of the Internets nobody wants to watch Lost 3 weeks after the episode was broadcast in the US.. people in the west-coast don't want to wait 3 hours...

i guess the issue is money. they sell rights to these shows for lots of $$, and don't have the ability to compensate for losing these revenues by selling ads on their own.

but they'll have to figure it out. otherwise users will just find other ways of getting to the content
  • Shawn · 1 year ago
The ability for Boxee to auto zoom or stretch content to fit the TV would be awesome so I don't have to keep resizing the video on my tv between watching shows and using the interface.
  • Shawn · 1 year ago
    Never mind. It's already there.
  • gerhard · 1 year ago
retrovision.tv would be great and for the norwegians http://www1.nrk.no/nett-tv

    also some live streaming channels
    http://www.france24.com/en/
    aljazeera
    bbcworld

    and many more
  • dich111 · 1 year ago
Boxee is looking awesome! Thank you for your hard work.
I would really love to see Discovery and Pandora. Even if Pandora had some of those dumb ads embedded in it, it would be worth it.
  • Phil · 1 year ago
    Pandora, Please!
  • Phil · 1 year ago
For boxee to mark what shows in the selection menu you have watched like itunes, with its little blue dots. And for it to remember where you left off, if you stop a video.
  • ian · 1 year ago
Having Netflix would be amazing. Also BBC would be great as well.
  • Darren · 1 year ago
I've got to agree with some others, ABC please. Thanks for the fantastic program!
  • avner · 1 year ago
it seems we need to find an easy way to let people who can hack a few lines of code to write a boxee plug-in that will add support for a specific service.

no way we'll be able to chase down all these content sources on our own.
  • itsbobsledtime · 1 year ago
I think Netflix integration would be amazing.
  • itsbobsledtime · 1 year ago
Oh, SlingBox integration would also be incredible.
  • brad · 1 year ago
i will throw in yet another vote for Netflix. how can we help make this happen? letters, emails, phone calls, petitions to Netflix? seriously? sounds like the boxee fan wagon is filling up quick. how can we push our weight around?
  • avner · 1 year ago
@brad i am with you on this. we should put together a petition to Netflix. it's such a perfect fit to boxee. we need to get their attention
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Worldwide radio stations... via API for radiotime.com... This would be fantastic!

    mtvmusic.com would be really nice!

    Is netflix instant streaming possible???
  • avner · 1 year ago
    @Kebin i agree re mtvmusic.com it's a really nice implementation.

    Netflix will be more challenging.

but we'll try and get both to boxee

ABC shows and Joost! Keep up the great work guys!
  • Erik K Veland · 1 year ago
There's too much focus on geolocated shows. It really blows having to go through proxies. Can we get some more focus on international shows? Not everyone here is an American.
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Erik we're going to try and bring more International content in, as well as make it easier for developers to make their content available on boxee
  • Dave · 1 year ago
I just started the netflix instant watch beta using the silverlight plugin on my laptop. I'd love to be able to use it on boxee too.
  • eel · 1 year ago
So one thing that is a quick win, functionality wise on the internet video section is geo targeting.
Allow 3rd party content providers (aka me) place specific video feeds in Boxee internet section based on their IP location.
I work a for a content provider who has many free Media RSS feeds that could be slot in for the continent of africa. ( however this is not your big hitter on target markets)
So being outside of the continent of USA I cannot view HULU without a US IP (should be configurable with a proxy)
I want to plug feeds into that video window now.
oh ..what are your skinning rules/prefernces?
  • Tom · 1 year ago
It would great to see the new Netflix instant watch using Silverlight 2.0 supported.
  • Dan · 1 year ago
How about a live streaming news station? (msnbc, cnn, etc) would really make all tv obsolete.
  • Noah · 1 year ago
How about, for us Australians, ABC iview?
  • avner · 1 year ago
@Noah we need to find a way to enable users to add content from all over the world. no way we could cover it all.

YouPorn and RedTube. I know it's not as popular as any of the Primetime networks, but I think adult content has its place. A plugin very similar to that for YouTube would probably be about right.

In the USA, I want to watch all the German language TV programs/movies/news/documentaries, etc. on this website:

    http://www.arte.tv/de/Willkommen/70.html

I want to bypass the expensive and crappy American cable TV channels..... I do not want to have to pay $$$$ for channels I do not want. I want to be able to choose exactly what I want to watch.

Stuff found online is much, much better quality. Please make sure it is much cheaper than cable. Any streaming German language TV stations would be very nice.
  • suikris · 1 year ago
    hi,

i've just installed the latest boxee version (0.9.3383) on my apple tv, but don't seem to have access to hulu and other content mentioned above (should be under videos/internet...)

would really love to try it out!

keep up the awesome work, you rock.
  • JH · 1 year ago
    SPORTS.

To the be TRUE alternative to cable/SAT you've got to find a way to get college and NFL football on Boxee.

I have no clue how, other than ESPN360... too bad you can't just talk to the NCAA conferences (SEC, BIG10, PAC10 ect) and get them to share their signal online for boxee users. That would be best b/c all of the conferences now have their own channels and their agreements (I believe) allow them to use the broadcast as they see fit....

Anyway, that's the only reason I have a Comcast account to watch my college team every Saturday. Once that is covered you've got the entire market.
  • Danny Engesser · 1 year ago
LIVE stuff would be really nice... support for USTREAM, Stickam and Qik services/streams would be cool additions. I would second the need for a LIVE news stream (or streams) like Fox/CNN/MSNBC, etc.

  • joodz · 1 year ago
I'll join the request for RTVE.es (Public Spanish TV) integration into Boxee. That would be wonderful. I am using Boxee on AppleTV and can't tell you how excited I am about what you guys are doing. It would be great if a user (with some development skill) could be able to re-format the rtve.es outputs and make them work as an Boxee's input source. Instead of waiting for a Boxee's update. Is that doable?
